FAQs

Can I do an internship or summer project with you?
Thank you for your interest. I’m afraid the answer is generally no: I rarely have suitable projects. When an opportunity does come up, I announce it on my social media.
Can I do a PhD under your supervision?
Yes, I currently have supervision capacity. Doctoral students join through the Imperial College Business School PhD programme, usually on the Economics & Public Policy pathway.
Applications for September 2027 entry are open. The deadline is 2 December 2026. There is one intake per year. Full entry requirements, the application process and key dates are on the Business School website.
- The programme
- Fully funded: a full tuition fee waiver and a living stipend for up to five years, subject to satisfactory progress (funding). It starts with a two-year MRes, followed by the PhD, which normally takes a further three to four years. It is full-time and London-based; there is no part-time, executive or distance-learning option.
- Who gets in
- Competition is very strong: across the Business School we receive around 200 applications for about 15 places each year. To work with me in health and/or environmental economics, you need a very strong background in economics and quantitative methods, because the MRes involves rigorous graduate training in microeconomics, econometrics and quantitative methods.
- GMAT or GRE
- Compulsory. The GRE is preferred for the Economics & Public Policy pathway. We expect strong scores on every part of the test; the 90th percentile or above is strong.
- Research proposal
- You do not need a fully developed proposal yet. Broad interests, for example in health, environment and inequality, are fine: you will refine them during the MRes. What matters is that they fit our faculty’s research strengths and that you have the economics and quantitative preparation the programme requires.
Next steps. If, after reading the entry requirements (especially the academic and GRE requirements), you think you would be a competitive candidate, I encourage you to apply. If your interests are close to my work, list me as a potential supervisor in your application, and we can have a chat about it. For questions about the application process, please contact the Admissions Team at doctoral@imperial.ac.uk, who will be happy to help.
Can you give me career advice?
I give brief career advice to my current students only.
